CEU Course Description
Academic Recovery to Support Literacy Skills in K–12 Education equips educators with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to address unfinished learning and accelerate literacy development across grade levels. Recognizing that literacy is foundational to success in every subject area, this course emphasizes the importance of targeted, data-informed instruction to support reading, writing, and language development for all students. Educators will explore the impact of disrupted instruction on literacy outcomes, examine the components of effective literacy instruction, and learn how to identify and address skill gaps through purposeful assessment and intervention. Participants will also examine the distinction between remediation, intervention, and acceleration, with a strong focus on ensuring students have access to grade-level learning while receiving the support they need to succeed. The course highlights research-based strategies to strengthen reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and writing, as well as approaches for supporting multilingual learners and students with diverse learning needs. In addition, educators will learn how to integrate literacy recovery practices into core instruction and content-area classrooms, use progress monitoring to guide instruction, and foster student engagement, confidence, and motivation in literacy learning. Through practical tools, instructional routines, and action planning, participants will leave with strategies that can be immediately applied to support meaningful and sustained literacy growth. Throughout this course, participants will learn about 1) the impact of disrupted instruction and unfinished learning on literacy development, 2) effective, research-based strategies for identifying and addressing literacy gaps through assessment, intervention, and acceleration, and 3) practical approaches for integrating literacy recovery into daily instruction to support equitable outcomes and student success.
