CEU Course Description

Enhancing Algebra Instruction: Tools and Techniques for Educators equips teachers with research-based strategies and practical tools to strengthen algebra instruction and improve student understanding. The course emphasizes the critical role algebra plays in students’ mathematical development and future academic and career success. Educators will examine common cognitive, conceptual, and affective challenges students face when learning algebra, as well as the importance of equity, access, and inclusive instructional practices. Participants will explore effective approaches for making algebra concepts concrete, supporting representational fluency, and fostering mathematical discourse through purposeful questioning. The course also highlights how to apply these strategies in real classroom contexts through lesson redesign, modeling, and thoughtful technology integration. Finally, educators will learn methods for differentiating instruction, supporting struggling learners, extending learning for advanced students, and implementing culturally responsive teaching practices to ensure all students can engage meaningfully with algebra. Throughout this course, participants will learn about 1) the role of effective algebra instruction in promoting conceptual understanding and equity, 2) research-based instructional strategies that deepen algebraic reasoning, and 3) practical tools and techniques for reaching diverse learners in algebra classrooms.
