CEU Course Description

Reimagining Responses to Classroom Behaviors equips K–12 educators with the knowledge, tools, and mindsets necessary to understand and respond to student behavior through a developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and relationship-centered lens. Rather than focusing solely on managing behavior, this course invites teachers to explore the root causes of student actions and to reframe behavior as a form of communication, often shaped by stress, unmet needs, or developmental factors. Educators will examine the science behind behavior, including brain development, the effects of trauma, and neurodivergent expressions of regulation, and learn how to foster environments that promote emotional safety and student connection. The course emphasizes the importance of strong teacher-student relationships, emotional co-regulation, and culturally responsive practices. Through exploration of restorative justice, trauma-informed approaches, and proactive strategies, teachers will gain practical tools to support student growth while maintaining dignity and trust. Participants will also reflect on their own responses to behavior, consider the impact of bias, and create sustainable plans that center equity, empathy, and collaboration with families and colleagues. By the end of this course, educators will be prepared to shift from reactive discipline toward supportive systems that foster long-term behavioral and academic success for all students.

CEU Course Objectives:

  1. Define behavior as a form of communication influenced by emotional, developmental, and contextual factors.
  2. Summarize the impact of trauma, stress, and neurodivergence on student behavior and learning.
  3. Identify strategies to build strong teacher-student relationships and promote emotional regulation.
  4. Recall restorative and trauma-informed practices that support positive behavior responses.
