CEU Course Description

Social studies is an integral part of a modern student’s educational experience. However, more and more, it’s getting passed over for more testable academic aims. Because social studies can help a young student build a lifelong perspective, it’s crucial as a support for the civic mission of schools - and for helping students become future productive citizens and community members. Through social studies, students gain an appreciation for history, art, community, and what we as humans have achieved through time. Social studies can also be the glue that holds together and integrates other subjects, if we let it. In this course, we’ll delve into what makes social studies special, meaningful, challenging and relevant for today’s classroom. We’ll also discuss ways to incorporate social studies in other subjects and review tips and techniques for teaching social studies remotely and with the aid of technology.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the types of subjects and standards that are involved in a comprehensive social studies education
  2. Illustrate precisely why social studies is important for students, as well as for schools and communities alike
  3. Outline specific strategies for teaching social studies remotely with success
  4. Describe several ways to teach social studies with the benefit of technology
  5. Understand and brainstorm several ways to incorporate social studies into other subjects (e.g., language arts, science, math, art) to increase the efficacy of instruction
  6. Design a plan to teach logical thinking in a way that will help students form a good framework for critical analyses
  7. Note the characteristics of a good social studies teacher and student
  8. Review several practical strategies for teaching social studies in an empathetic, engaging way
