CEU Course Description

The Paradox of Substance Misuse Among School-Aged Youth provides educators with a comprehensive understanding of the evolving substance misuse issue affecting adolescents in the United States. Although reported use of traditional substances such as alcohol and cigarettes has stabilized or declined, overdose rates among youth have risen dramatically due to increasingly potent substances, synthetic drugs, counterfeit medications, and polysubstance exposure. This course explores the complex factors contributing to modern youth substance misuse, including social media influence, mental health challenges, trauma, peer dynamics, and changing cultural perceptions of risk. Educators will examine current epidemiological trends, emerging synthetic drug threats, and the warning signs associated with substance misuse and overdose among school-aged youth. Participants will also learn practical strategies for recognizing concerning behaviors, responding effectively to emergencies, supporting students and families through trauma-informed approaches, and implementing prevention and harm reduction practices within school communities. Emphasis is placed on creating safe, supportive, and student-centered environments that promote resilience, connectedness, and early intervention. Throughout this course, participants will learn about 1) the changing landscape of youth substance misuse and emerging overdose risks, 2) effective strategies for identifying and responding to warning signs and substance-related emergencies in schools, and 3) evidence-based approaches for prevention, harm reduction, and building safer, more supportive school communities.
