CEU Course Description
While school age children were not considered the most vulnerable population to the Covid-19 virus, few groups were more affected by the mandates and closures resulting from this pandemic. In 2020, 1.5 billion students across 188 countries were forced out of schools due to mandated lockdowns, and even as of March 2022, 405 million students across 23 countries had not fully returned to school yet (OECD, 2021; Broom, 2022). School is not just a place for learning, but children also rely on schools for social interaction, nutritious meals, mental health support, and health services. As such, school closures have had devastating effects on children’s learning and social-emotional health, and educators fear that academic and emotional recovery is unattainable. In this course, participants will learn about (1) the losses that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic; (2) the impact of the learning and social-emotional losses on various groups; (3) what schools, families, and communities can do to remedy these losses; and (4) what research says about losses and recovery.
