CEU Course Description

The LGBTQ community at large has come a long way over the past decades, allowing individuals within the community to pursue fairness and freedoms which those living before them would not have imagined. However, this joy rarely extends to the younger members of the community—LGBTQ students in schools, for whom every hallway is a gauntlet. Prioritizing safety for these students will allow them to grow and become fully-realized, productive members of our global community. Doing nothing will result in tragic outcomes for these students and the LGBTQ community as a whole. In this course, we discuss the reasons to increase protection for LGBTQ students as well as several practical ways to do so while prioritizing care for every member of your school community.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Examine the current safety statistics for LGBTQ students in schools.
  2. Review the reasons why school safety is a responsibility schools owe their students.
  3. Identify the ways in which you, as an educator, can make a key difference in an LGBTQ student’s life.
  4. Evaluate the ways that your school supports or does not currently support its LGBTQ population, and find ways to improve protections for them going forward.
